• It emits less CO2 in its combustion.
• Its combustion produces the same quantity of CO2 as the plants need to grow (CO2 closed cycle). Therefore, it avoids the greenhouse effect and helps to meet the Kyoto protocol.
• It generates less smoke. The methyl ester molecule has more oxygen atoms than conventional diesel (11.7% m/m compared to 1.1% m/m).

Kyoto protocol: Background

The Kyoto Protocol (11 December 1997) is an international agreement that aims to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases in order to reduce global warming. It likewise seeks to foster the generation of sustainable development, by also using non-conventional energies.

If the greenhouse gases produced by man are not drastically reduced in a short period of time, it is feared that the consequences of global climatic change shall be serious.
